Back in November, I wrote my most popular blog post to date – a list of what to buy and what to keep for Baby #2. I was still pregnant with Baby #2 at the time, so in all honesty, I didn’t 100% know what I was talking about. Now that Audrey is here, and I’ve been doing this mama-of-two thing for 11 weeks now, I decided to go back and revisit that post. And surprise! I DID know what I was talking about after all.
Of course my list included the obvious…a double stroller, a good baby carrier, etc. But, now that I’m caring for both a newborn and a toddler, I thought I’d share some less-obvious items that help me successfully (sometimes not so successfully) get through my day…
Rock ‘n’ Play Sleeper – I also used this when Jackson was a baby, but I never knew how much of an essential it would become this time around. It’s a lightweight (portable!) bed that keeps baby in an upright position. I love using this for times that I can’t put the baby in the carrier – like when I’m giving my toddler a bath, or want to sit down on the floor to play with him.
Large Diaper Bag – This one kind of seems like a no-brainer, but I truly had no idea how much STUFF I’d have to tote around with two kids. In addition to all the loot required for a newborn, toddlers need an endless selection of snacks, pull-ups, and of course entertainment devices (books, iPad, toys). I love my Kate Spade bag that my mom bought me for my birthday. It’s deep and roomy for all the baby stuff, but doesn’t look like a traditional diaper bag so I can use it as a tote once the kids are older. Thanks mom!
Large Bottles of Toiletries – Double the babies means double the baths. I’m shocked at how quickly we go through baby wash, shampoo, and lotion. I never want to run out of any of these, so never again will I buy the regular size of anything.
Muslin Swaddle Blankets – Remember that big diaper bag I just mentioned? Well, as big as it may seem, mamas of two still have to consolidate to fit all of the essentials into one bag. That’s why I love muslin swaddle blankets – they’re easy to pack and extremely versatile. Muslin blankets are typically bigger than traditional receiving blankets, making them good for both infants and toddlers. I have one with me at all times because not only are they great for keeping the kids warm, but they also make for an awesome nursing cover. I’ve learned that multi-use items are key when it comes to traveling (even if it’s just to Target) with two kids.
Do you have more than one baby? What else would you add to this list of must-haves?
