It’s officially that time of the year. For me, it’s pumpkin spice latte season. For my husband, it’s football season. If there’s one thing we both love about this time of theyear, it’s the food. It’s finally time to turn the AC off, bring out the crock pot, and get cooking. We tend to not cook much in the summer months, so it’s refreshing to make a home cooked meal now that it’s starting to cool down.
Every Saturday, my husband requests a “game day snack” while he watches college football. I used to not quite understand what he meant by that. Chips? Beer? What exactly is a game day snack? Well, after a few years, I finally figured out what hits the spot on game day – something meaty, that can be picked at throughout the day, and can be thrown in the crock pot.
This sloppy joe recipe is sure to be a crowd pleaser – whether it’s for your family or a party of football fans. I love to make sloppy joes when I find ground beef on sale. Because I almost always have all of the sauce ingredients on hand, this is easily a $10 meal. Disclaimer: Once you make this, you’ll never get away with the canned stuff again!
(Makes about a dozen BIG sloppy joes.)
- 2 lbs. ground beef
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 12 hamburger buns
- 1 cup ketchup
- 3 1/2 tbsp. yellow mustard
- 3 1/2 tbsp. worcestershire sauce
- 2 1/2 tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 tbsp. lemon juice
- 1 tbsp. chili powder
- 1 tsp. smoked paprika
- 1 tsp. cumin
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
Brown ground beef, along with diced onions, over medium-high heat. Drain fat.
In a separate pot, whisk together sauce ingredients. Cook at medium heat until sauce thickens.
In a crock pot, combine meat mixture and sauce. Set to warm.
My husband enjoys his sloppy joes topped with cheese and pickles. However, I think they’re delicious à la carte. Enjoy however you see fit!
