The 20 Minute Rule: How This Mama Gets $#!+ Done!

Ever wonder how some moms seem to have it all together?  The clean house, the full-time job, a homemade dinner on the table every night.  I by no means have everything together.  But somehow, I manage to still get stuff done.

What’s my secret?  It’s a little thing called time management.

It’s so easy as stay-at-home parent to spend your days watching hours of Netflix, snuggled up on the couch with your littles.  And as fun as that can be, it’s important for us to fill our days with of a little more productivity.  This is why, no matter what it is I’m trying to juggle, I get it done using the 20 minute rule.

So how does it work?  If there are two projects I’m working on, I set a 20 minute timer on my phone.  I switch between the two projects every 20 minutes.  It keeps my brain sharp, and prevents me from burning out from working on the same thing for too long.  It also prevents me from falling down the Facebook rabbit hole because I’m focussed on the task at hand and making the most of my time.

{What to do when the control freak loses control}

I also use the 20 minute rule when I’m cleaning.  I get as much done in each room as I can in 20 minutes.  In-between rooms, I spend 20 minutes on laundry.  Whatever gets done, gets done.  And whatever doesn’t get done, doesn’t.  It works.

Now I bet you’re wondering how my kids fit into this equation.  Easy.  When they need me, I’m there.  Say I’m working on blogging, and the baby needs to eat.  I stop what I’m doing and she gets my attention.  Simple as that.  When I get the chance, I pick back up where I left off.

Who  knew it was this easy?  Start scheduling out your days – I’m telling you, the 20 minute rule works wonders.  Let me know if it works out for you!

Do you have any time management tips to make the most out of your days?

    1. I always get more work done when I’m under pressure. There’s something about that timer ticking that just makes me hustle harder. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. I haven’t hear for this rule before but I’m doing something similar to manage all mama work. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Brilliant. I have always been awesome at time management… And then I had a baby. Now, it’s like I never knew anything about it at all because the crawling baby is everywhere at once and naptimes are not nearly as long as one would hope. I’m going to try the 20 minute rule. Thank you!

    1. I hope it helps you out, Lindsay. It is so hard to juggle everything as a mama. And those naptimes, why do they go by sooooo fast?!

  3. Love this rule! I use this at the end of the day before putting the kids to bed. We set the timer for 20 minutes and get as much cleaning done as we can. I love the idea of applying it to the rest of your day, too!

  4. I love this idea because it’d help me remember there is light at the end of the tunnel! And I. Red that more than anything! I’m going to try this today!!

    1. It’s truly the only thing that works for me! Without it, I’d probably be on Facbeook for 23 hours of the day, and sleeping the other hour. ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol
